1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you chose to take on the role of CIO at Choice Hotels?

Choice has a vested interest in ensuring associates have the opportunity to grow and experience a rewarding career. I started at Choice 20 years ago as a software engineer, envisioning and creating advanced technology-based capabilities for our customers. That drive has not changed — as a leader of technology for Choice, I continue to engage highly skilled and creative associates who are passionate about their talents. They help us continue to be the most innovative hotel company in the world.

2. How have you unlocked the power of the ever-increasing amount of data at your disposal? (i.e. development of ChoiceADVANTAGE)

This data is being leveraged for continuous improvement and innovation relative to hotel performance, revenue management, franchise growth strategies, consumer (guest) recognition, personalization, relationship management, and franchisee education just to name a few. It's paid off well so far and it's just the tip of the iceberg. Aside from the data analytics, our services integrations will provide capabilities to make our goal of providing “data as a service” a reality.

3. What do you think earned Choice Hotels the Hospitality Technology Innovation Award? How intense was the competitive environment? How did Choice Hotels stand out?

Choice was willing to take a risk on a potentially smart failure which resulted in a hugely successful solution, ChoiceADVANTAGE. We were willing to invest in an expected future state of cloud technology, which is now a standard other hotel companies wish they had. At the time the competitive environment lacked the solution we were looking for so we had to create it. We stood out as an innovative company by addressing a business need and lack of product on the market, which resulted in us taking a risk to gain a market advantage.

4. What are you doing to change perceptions of Choice Hotels in the tech space?

Choice is a company focused on continued growth. That growth always has some business capability where technology plays a significant role. We are working hard to get the word out that we are passionate about our growth as a significant software development company, with over 500 associates working on IT-related projects within Choice Hotels International. We have won many awards for our innovations, host various user groups, and speak at universities and industry events about the goals we are achieving, architectures and technologies we are leveraging, and how we are engaging everyone in our story.
